The Industry
Agriculture is one of New York State's largest industries. Gross farm income in 1993 was $3.05 billion. Fruit and vegetable crop values are nearly $437 million yearly. Our industry continues to play an important role in the entire state economy when you consider factors of labor, packaging, freight, and real estate tax costs paid by members.
We are also proud to note that despite today's increasing food prices, the American consumer spends a smaller proportion of their take-home pay for food items than any other nation.
The industry is vast, and we have representatives from nearly every type of product. Besides canned and frozen fruits, vegetables, and wine, there are producers and processors of juices, dry bean products, cocktail and other sauces, syrups, puddings and pie fillings, peanut butter, jams, jellies, and other specialty items.
We are represented in the following organizations:
- Council of Food Processing Association Executives
- Empire State Food/Agricultural Leadership Institute (LEAD-NY)
- New York State Agricultural Society
- New York State Dept. of Agriculture & Markets Food Inspection Services Advisory Committee
- New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation
- Agricultural Advisory Committee
- Environmental Enforcement Advisory Committee
- Business Council of New York State
- Worker's Compensation Committee
- Environmental Committee
